MJ and Charlie thank you for visiting the shop.
"Tiger Bright" was a design I had in my mind for a long time, but I needed a particular piece of wood to finish it. I eventually managed to get a wide plank of Douglas Fir from a saw mill in Scotland, and could proceed with it.
The tiger design was drawn onto the wood and cut out using a scroll saw, and the base design was done the same. The base piece was fitted in and the tealight assembled , once dry the whole item was then subject to the technique of Shou Sugi Ban! e.g. it was basically run over with a hot flame from a blowtorch. After it had cooled down it was then washed with white spirit and sanded and it gives the Douglas fir this wonderful colouring.
Its meant to represent a tiger walking through the jungle half hiding because of its camouflage.
Originally designed in October last year the piece was finished in jan2018.
Dimensions 260mm x160mm x150mm it suits a 40 mm diameter tealight holder.
The design can into my head when experimenting with the shou sugi ban technique on some small pieces of Douglas fir I had .
