Item details

This sculpture was inspired by a visit to Scotland, where the woodland lichens were more magnificent than any I had ever seen before! Hunting through antiques shops for interesting things, I found an old map of Scotland and spotted a woodland beside a river, named Craggan Rour. I can't find it on modern maps, but perhaps the name lives on with the people that live nearby.

When I discovered that the Waverley Pens were named after Sir Walter Scott's novels, the Scottish theme fell in to place. It was competed by finding a beautiful old postcard of a Scottish loch for the tin lid.

“Craggan Rour” is one of a collection of "Found and Treasured" mixed media sculptures, each of which combines exquisite hand modelled porcelain ‘finds’ with found objects and ephemera. I use porcelain because I love to create sculptures by hand, and its strength and preciousness say something of how I feel about the small details of the natural world.
