"Craggan Rour" is a named after a Scottish woodland, found beside the River Dee. In my imagination exquisite lichens grow there, close by a loch where a heron stands...

The lichen in this small sculpture is actually made of hand modelled porcelain. I used simple hand tools to shape the soft porcelain clay, then fired it in my kiln to 1245 degrees centigrade. Then I attached the porcelain to a fragment of bark, adding tiny pieces of real lichen and moss to create a natural effect.

The pieces are held safe in a tin that once contained pen nibs (named after the Waverley novels of Sir Walter Scott), and is at least 50 years old. Inside the lid is a piece of an old postcard of a Scottish loch. When open, the tin is about 8cm tall, 6.5cm wide and 2cm deep.

"Craggan Rour" can stand upright on its own, or hang on the wall (I have added a twisted wire loop for hanging). The inside of the tin is unpainted, so you can see lovely reflections of the lichens and mosses in the metal. As would be expected for its age, some of the paint has rubbed off the tin in places, and there are small dents and marks inside and out, as shown in the photographs.
