Item details
This piece was inspired by walks in Royce Wood, a small woodland on the northern edge of Cambridgeshire. I first went there when researching the life of poet John Clare, as part of a project to commemorate 150 years since his death. Often I would notice little pieces of bark, fallen from the trees. Sometimes, they were bejewelled with lichens.
“Royce Wood” is one of a collection of "Found and Treasured" mixed media sculptures, each of which combines exquisite hand modelled porcelain ‘finds’ with found objects and ephemera. The original idea for this collection came from a gift I was given - a tiny red pillbox, about 100 years old, holding a collection of miniature seashells. Noticing how precious it felt, I began imagining other precious finds nestled in other old boxes, waiting to be rediscovered.
