Item details

Handmade high-fired buttons in white clay, glazed with white dolomite glaze and cobalt brush-painted decoration. Dolomite creates a semi-matt surface, silky smooth to the touch, and turns the blue cobalt lavender-colour in places. These buttons feel like sea-smoothed shells and add subtle painterly pattern to anything they adorn. Hand and machine-washable but I recommend you pop your buttoned item into a pillow case before using the washing machine, just to be sure.

Sizes comprise (per pack) 23mm and 25mm dia (approx). If you need a specific size please let me know which pack size you require in Note to Seller, I can also make sizes to order.

Each button is individually made and therefore may slightly differ in size and shape. The packs come packaged in a transparent cellophane bag and make great gifts for creative people!

I'll be heading off to Welbeck Winter Weekend (23-25 November) and Gifted Contemporary Christmas Fair (8-9 December) with my buttons and stitched textiles. Do come and say hello if you're there!

I started making buttons as part of a series of quilt-inspired pieces called 'Tethered Quilts' and then started using them to adorn cushions, tea cosies and clothes. I thought other people might like to use them too!

Each button is made entirely by hand, by making a small bead of clay and then carefully pinching it out, before making and neatening the holes. After a first firing they are ready to paint with glaze (the holes carefully cleaned with a damp brush) with a final addition of brush-painted oxide for the decoration before a second firing to 1060 celsius. It takes around two weeks for all these processes to make a button!
