Item details

Willow is such an inspiring tree. It is associated with the Goddess of the Moon, Hecate, in Greek mythology and is sacred tree to the Celtic druids, having its place within the Ogham, or tree alphabet. Some reference to a talismanic effect of protection from evil is also ascribed to Willow in Celtic lore.

In the Far east it is held in association with immortality, probably due to the way that willow will take root anywhere, even in a glass of water! It is this property that also helps willow to thrive in it common habitats of damp environments and on loch and river banks as fallen boughs float away from the tree and take root along the banks.

The uses of willow are many and varied. The most obvious is the use of the thin, whippy rods in basket making, however it was also commonly used in the construction of sound boxes for harps. In the Scottish Highlands it was used for making an orange dye, for ropes strong enough to moor boats with and for bridal and harness.
