This incense stick holder has been hand carved from meranti wood in central Scotland. It is light brown in colour and shaped like an elongated bowl, almost boat-like. I have recently added a bit more length and width to the design to accommodate longer incense sticks.

Meranti is a tropical hardwood hailing from Southeast Asia and used extensively in it's home range. It is also a very common wood across the world, used in plywood, general construction and garden furniture. I've most often seen it used in window and door facings, where it is invariably stained or painted. Here, you see the wood in its natural form, having been finished with a couple of coats of linseed oil only.

I'm a fairly regular incense user myself and the elongated bowl design here is both elegant and practical. The wide, deep channel keeps the ash off the table and allows you to burn a few sticks before needing to empty it.

The incense holders have been cut from a meranti board with a handsaw, the exterior shaped by chisel and plane followed by using a gouge to cut out the long bowl. Everything is sanded to a fine smooth texture and "dewhiskered" to prevent roughening up if you need to wash it.

It measures approximately 25.5cm (10") long and 3.2cm (1 1/4") wide but since they are handmade there may be a slight variation by a few mm.
