I'll be heading off to Welbeck Winter Weekend (23-25 November) and Gifted Contemporary Christmas Fair (8-9 December) with my buttons and stitched textiles. Do come and say hello if you're there!
Deck chair stripes march across the surface of this piece, with a dancing layer of handstitched yellow-gold crosses. Experimenting with pattern-placing is half the fun in these works, the other half is making shapes emerge through lots and lots of careful satin stitch.
The completed piece is constructed of layers of wadding and cotton, with fully-finished edges and a backing fabric on the reverse.
This item is mounted in a glazed, bespoke box frame with limewash finish. The piece measures approximately 175x175mm, frame size 405x405mm.
Starting with a blank canvas (or blank calico) is always an interesting challenge. An experimental space where layers of paint are applied over stencils, not revealing their surprise combinations until the paper is peeled away. This is a technique I first came across with the work of ceramicist John Maltby, but I think it works well for textiles too.
