Sgian Dubh in Scottish Red Deer Stag Antler and Scottish Yew

The Sgian Dubh is a ceremonial dagger traditionally worn (tucked int the sock) as part of Scottish Highland dress along with a kilt. The translation is Gaelic is knife of dagger for "Sgian" and black for "Dubh".
This knife handle is made from some Red Deer Stag Antler. I source this antler form near Lairg, Sutherland, North of Scotland. This beautiful material is creamy white sometimes with tones of grey, pink and even green. Unlike my wood Sgian Dubhs, i use the natural curves of antler to make a more rustic and unique piece. I sand down the antler until it is super smooth but leave a few small ruts so it can still be easily identifiable as antler, very comfortable in the hand and against the leg. For a professional finish i have used some locally sourced Scottish Yew for a centre to lock the knife tang and outer scales together. Yew is a very traditional and sought after wood in woodcraft. Slow growing, hard for a softwood and steeped in folklore. Yews warm orange colour goes beautifully with the antler.
To finish and protect the handle i have initially used Shellac Sealer and Cellulose thinners, just on the wood to make the colour pop. No wood finishes on the antler as that would turn it yellow. I finish with two types of industrial waxes, this leaves a hard wearing coating and a Satin sheen.
Comes complete with embossed black leather sheath and black presentation box.
Overall length 173mm x 31mm wide x 15mm thick.
Blade length 84mm x 25mm wide.

Part of my new range of wedding gifts that include Cufflinks and Kilt Pins. Sgian Dubhs are revered objects steeped in folklore. Some command crazy prices so my main intention here was to make the highest quality Sgian Dubh that would showcase the beauty of the materials that i choose to work. With this in mind i thought why not add two of these amazing materials for the price of one, this is why every one of my kilt knifes have either two wood combinations or antler and wood combination. They look spectacular, are built as heirloom pieces so fully expect them to span generations and I'm confident that they are the best value for quality on the market.
