The pots are hand thrown on an electric potter’s wheel then left to partially dry until they are leather hard. The pots are put back on the wheel and the bases are trimmed using a turning tool. Handles and decoration are added while the pots are at the leather hard stage.
They are now left to completely dry before they are fired in an electric kiln for about 10 hrs to 1000oC. When cooled the pots are dipped in glaze and again left to dry. At 1000oC the stoneware clay remains porous which allows the glaze to be absorbed into the pot.
The final firing varies from 1200oC 1260oC depending on the glaze. This firing takes about 12hrs and changers the clay which becomes non-porous. At the same time the glaze melts and becomes glass like. The whole process takes about a week depending on the weather and how quickly the pots dry out.
