Turned on a traditional, foot powered pole-lathe.

Salad or fruit bowl in beech with a free set of salad servers.

A exceptionally well turned beech salad bowl with no frills. I am quite happy about this one has turned out, the shavings flew of the hook tool beautifully and I cut a lovely finish on the last round.
Sometimes you get those pieces of wood that are a delight to turn, they smell good, they cut well, they are well balanced and you know : this is going to be a nice one. And so it is. I did not fuss with decorations and personally are most drawn to a zen-like minimalist style.

As it dried out it shape-shifted into the lush looking shape you can see in the pictures.
Quite a beauty.

The tree stood in a woodland near Wast Water in the stunning Lake District. When I turn on my traditional pole lathe I get really close to the wood and get a sense of its history.

Knowing where the tree lived is important to me and I love to be able to tell people its provenance.
