Item details

Art Deco design is a favourite of mine. The antithesis of the naturalistic Art Nouveau movement, it is characterized by clean lines and geometric, often industrial confidence. Simple designs such as this were used unapologetically, to allow the exotic coverings to say all that was needed.
Shagreen, sometimes called galuchat after the man who pioneered it's resurgence, is the skin of stingrays, a leather like skin covered in bony nodules that make it very tough. As a result it's use is awkward and laborious, and thus prohibitively costly for all but premium pieces.
These skins are taken from stingrays fished for meat, and their procurement is governed by CITES legislation.
