Item details

This set of quintetto tables are a near copy of a Gillows design. Gillows were one of Britain's top furniture making companies in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The legs and edges are rosewood, the frames mahogany veneered in satinwood. The five panels on the tops are sequoia burr, brown oak burr, white ebony, cerejeira curl and snakewood.
The finish is traditional french polish.

As an antique restorer I am forced to preserve the 'patina' of furniture, as that proof of age is crucial to maintaining the value. However, the universal muted brown that decades of ultraviolet creates is heartbreaking to see when one knows that beneath that surface are beautifully vibrant woods, often chosen precisely for their contrast.
A simple yet elegant design, slightly altered from the original, gives an ideal platform to display such contrast, with woods of varying colour and grain pattern. Perhaps a little brash for some, but right up my street.
