"Lizard Point" tells the story of a treasure found long ago on a Cornish beach, and tucked in a little box to keep it safe...

The miniature 'treasure' here is actually an intricate, handmade porcelain sculpture. It is inspired by the beautiful corals that live around the British coastline and was created especially for this box. I used simple hand tools to shape the soft porcelain clay, then fired it in my kiln to 1245 degrees.

The little pill box is French, from a town east of Paris. How it came to Kent, where it was recently found, remains a mystery... though perhaps that is part of its story? It is approximately 4.4cm diameter and 3.4cm tall, and made of very thin pieces of wood. The now-mottled original label is still in place.

The bottom of the box is padded with dark grey / black tissue paper. The inside edge is lined with part of a map of Cornwall, dated early 1940. With the box lid off, the edge of the map shows just above the rim, and Lizard Point can be seen.

This precious sculpture would be a beautiful gift for a nature lover, story teller, or someone who who delights in miniature handmade treasures.

Around a hundred years ago, a collection of tiny seashells was tucked inside a little red pillbox, with a note saying “Red Sea"..... generations later, this box found a home with me. Noticing how precious it felt, I began wondering what other found treasures might be nestling in other old boxes, waiting to be rediscovered…

And so, my “Found and Treasured” mixed media sculptures began, inspired by first that little red box, and later by seeing similar old boxes and tins in museums which, long ago, had held precious finds.

Each sculpture combines exquisite hand modelled porcelain ‘finds’ with found objects and vintage ephemera. Each one tells its own imagined story of a place and time when something beautiful was found and treasured. At the heart of each one is my love of the natural world... and my delight in finding and making small treasures.
