This beautiful little handmade porcelain necklace was inspired by a tiny oysterling mushroom that I found last autumn.

First I shaped the soft porcelain clay by hand, coaxing it in to a slightly cupped shape and creating an overlap at the bottom. The gills were then drawn in to the clay and a tiny ‘dot’ of porcelain added as a focal point.

Once the piece had dried, I painted green ceramic stain, with touches of turquoise, in to the gills, and then painted on clear glaze. It was fired to 1245 degrees centigrade in my kiln.

The pendant has a metal bail, and a natural coloured (light beige) cotton cord. The length of the necklace can be adjusted by moving the two sliding knots, with a maximum of about 60cm (24”).

The pendant has a maximum diameter of about 29mm (a little bigger than a 10p piece) and is about 2-3 mm thick. The back is plain, unglazed and uncoloured. It was created without the use of moulds, so it is not perfectly round and the edges were shaped to curve naturally and unevenly… all of which, I think, adds to its natural, and genuinely handmade style.
