Item details

During the heyday of the fishing industry in Lowestoft up to 60 million herring could be landed in a single day. Scottish herring girls would follow the boats as they moved down the coast, starting in Scotland in June and ending at Lowestoft in November, joining the local women to gut, salt and pack thousands of tons of ‘Silver Darlings’. Although a red herring is normally thought of as a misleading clue, it is also the name given to the dried, smoked fish, turned red by the smoke.
