This washbag is made out of a gorgeous pair of old kitchen curtains that I found in a charity shop in Sherborne, Dorset. They feature apples, berries, strawberries, carrots and leaves aginst a dark blue gingham panel background and are very strongly reminiscent of those charming but tiny kitchens that feature in 1960s films (I'm thinking 'Genevieve' here).
The washbag is lined with waterproof fabric taken from a gazebo which collapsed on us during a very windy market recently, and is now performing a useful although somewhat unexpected second life as waterproof linings. It fastens at the top with a plain dark blue Petersham drawstring cord.
It's a good size for weekends away or even longer if you are quite tidy with little travel size / sample bottles of toiletries.
All fabrics are machine washed before the stitching starts, so you can put this in the washing machine when necessary.

Handmade in Hammersmith Washbag no. 27
It is so rare to find genuinely vintage cotton curtains like these, let alone in a charity shop. I'm not sure if they are from the fifties or sixties, but it was very tempting to simply add some curtain rings and hang them in our own kitchen. However, creative sense prevailed and with a deep breath I cut them up to make these bags and washbags.
