These bags are made out of a gorgeous pair of old kitchen curtains that I found in a charity shop in Sherborne, Dorset. They feature apples, berries, strawberries, carrots and leaves aginst a dark blue gingham panel background and are very strongly reminiscent of those charming but tiny kitchens that feature in 1960s films (I'm thinking 'Genevieve' here). They are double-stitched for strength inside and on the handles, which are long enough to wear over the shoulder.
This is the larger version of this bag (to the left in the first photograph, and shown in the second photograph) and would be good for the very obvious task of storing things in your kitchen in a cheerful retro way: onions, potatoes, carrier bags, jam-jar lids, clothes pegs etc. This larger version you could also take to the beach, for a picnic, or shopping trips. Because each of my bags started as something else (a wool kilt, a tweed jacket, a cotton shirt) they come with a unique numbered card that shows what they used to be, and where they came from – a sort of bag birth certificate.
All fabrics are pre-washed in the machine, and you can put this on a cotton wash if needed.
This fabric is also available as a smaller bag (34 x 28cm) and a waterproof washbag; see separate listings.

Handmade in Hammersmith Bag no. 250
It is so rare to find genuinely vintage cotton curtains like these, let alone in a charity shop. I'm not sure if they are from the fifties or sixties, but it was very tempting to simply add some curtain rings and hang them in our own kitchen. However, creative sense prevailed and with a deep breath I cut them up to make these bags and washbags.
