A piece of Birch from my Parents Garden (They save timber for my wood burning stove, which I collect periodically: then some pieces cry out for being spun on a lathe...). I believe this is finished with Sanding sealer from Chestnut products, which is listed as safe for toys. It has then had a coat of bees wax for a nice lustre. ( We use Melamine plates from the Disney store & I use a bowl identical to this for storing fruit, you'll have to make a judgement, but I wouldn't recommend liquids or wet or hot foodstuffs)
