Until this summer, I had only heard the extraordinary, acrobatic song of the nightingale on recording, but this year I was determined to hear one for myself.
It is one of the few birds to sing at night, hence its name, but it also sings during the day. A brief migrant from Africa, it is becoming increasingly rare here and its song is only performed for a few sort weeks. It likes still, warm conditions and so one fine Sunday in early May I went to Hopton Fen, where I knew they had been heard., and I was lucky. The thrill of hearing it was intense and I should listening to its trill perched in an oak tree. When it finished, a cuckoo started to call -it was a good day!
I have chosen to depict it among oak leaves as they enjoy the dappled cover of its branches and I wanted to show it singing, just as I remember it.
