I first became entranced by rooks after reading Mark Cocker's "Crow Country". He described the great corvid roost at Buckenham, on the River Yare, in Norfolk and, as it was only a few miles away, I was determined to see this spectacle.
I wasn't disappointed. Thousands of crows and rooks converged at dusk and there were great surges of thousands of these amazing birds going to one of the largest rookeries in Europe. I felt very privileged to see it.
Rooks are noble, intelligent and inquisitive and it was these qualities I wanted to capture in my linocut.
