Workington really was a working town once. Coal firing steel smelting track extruding. Now, when you walk on the beach, there are layers of pebbles trapped in old slag heaps. These are being worn away by the sea and reclaimed as part of the natural landscape. This piece is so thick you could even walk on it, if you wanted – it’s mostly Herdwick so it’s robust enough.
71cm x 98cm
Mounted on Hessian Jute
The scale of former industry along the Workington / Whitehaven / Maryport coastline is phenomenal. For mile after mile you can see deposits from the former steel industry. It's oddly beautiful to see it now being reclaimed by the sea. This piece entirely makes use of the different colours and textures of Herdwick wool. It has been wet felted then put through a washing machine which has caused it to felt thickly and unevenly. Like layers of slag beaten by the sea on the shoreline.
