This kolrosed bowl is medium sized and was handcarved in one of the many variations of the traditional Scandinavian style using green woodworking techniques and tools which would have been familiar in Saxon and Viking times - namely ax, adze, knife and hook knives. Kolrosing is the traditional Norse way of decorating woodware and household treen - wood tattooing for a better way of describing it, in this case using finely ground coffee and paprika for the pigment.
It would be ideal for anyone wanting a fruit or salad bowl or for use as a table centrepiece.
The bowl is 17 inches long, 9 inches wide and 3 inches deep at the lowest point on the rim.
A couple of dark knots appeared during the carving process which were unexpected having been grown over by the living trunk. These were sound and hard however so I continued on my way and finished the bowl around them. They should last as long as the bowl which will be a long long time given that it is cared for.
Both the interior and external surfaces retain a smooth tooled finish as a result of the handcarving process.
Finally I finished the bowl with multiple coats of culinary grade linseed oil applied hot to give thorough protection. It could be wax polished if a gloss finished is wanted but I have left it plainly oiled so that the new owner can decide on that.
Yes, after beavering down with the adze into the heartwood of the half log, a jolly little knot appeared. Luckily when it was originally formed about fifty years ago, the new wood grew around it and so a happy ending for the tree, the bowl and myself. It does add character, as everyone has said, the grain fairly swirls around it like a current in a stream.
The kolrosed design on the rim is my ferny bramble motif, a bit gothy and vaguely Tolkeinesque.
