A hanging spider web sculpture made from copper and cotton with feather and gemstone charms attached. All the charms are handmade from scratch. The frame is made from copper wire using a wrapping technique, it is then aged using sulphur to give it a dark patina. The web is then weaved using cotton thread and a lot of patience. The length from the highest part of the frame to the lowest hanging charm is 26cm. The width at the frames widest is around 9cm.
I was watching a spider weave its web one morning. It was made with such grace and precision from such a tiny creature. I just had to try and weave my own web. I set out learning the different stages the spider uses and then adapted it to work with the material that I had. You could argue that it is a dream catcher, it does carry some inspiration from them as they are meant to be the web of a spider (although the weave is different if you look closely). I like to think that these stand apart from the native American Indian culture in that they are more to do with the celebration of the spider and its incredible artistry, rather than a device to catch dreams. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that you can’t give it your own magical meaning or story...
