Labradorite is an enigmatic gemstone for those who can keep a secret. It appears grey at first, but when the light changes it flashes with violet, blue, green and yellow colours, in a way reminiscent of opals. I have mounted three of these stones, all of which have flashes of violet, green and turquoise blue fire in sunlight, on sterling silver pins, hand-forged at my home in West Sussex, to create a dramatic pair of Minimalist earrings. Labradorite is a difficult gemstone to photograph because the light needs to come from the correct angle to show the flash. The best photograph for showing this flash is number three, where three of the stones are showing a nice violet and there is a hint of turquoise in another of the top stones. The first photograph shows greenish yellow flash on the right hand side bead at the bottom. These colours are all much more visible in the flesh! They come beautifully presented in a gift box and measure 47 mm or 1 3/4" in length
