Birds are my favourite subject to embroider and the song thrush is one of my favourites to watch in the garden.
I've hand embroidered this one against a muted background of 3 pieces of linen (in different shades) which I have stitched together. I have also used a backing fabric of cream cotton to give the embroidery stability.
The orange of the fruit/berries gives the piece a lovely pop of colour to the otherwise gentle palette. Quality DMC embroidery threads have been used throughout and the whole piece has then been stretched and 'laced' around a piece of artists' mountboard. The lacing isn't very pretty - but it is essential for keeping the work taut and pucker-free (and is hidden when framed). You can see the lacing in the photographs.
I have included the front mounting in a colour to complement the work. The mounting (and the finished work) measures 8 inches by 6 inches.
My bird embroideries take many hours to design and stitch and so this song thrush really would be a lovely and unique piece of textile art for your own home, as well as a wonderful gift for a bird or nature lover.
