This is a hand carved small brook trout rising to take a fly. Mounted on a pure brass rod and a piece of Spalted Ash I have given an indication of patterns with a hot knife blade. The fish measures 23 cm by 13 cm at its tallest point.
When not in the workshop you can normally find me by a river somewhere in the season, trying to catch a trout. So, like most fishermen I have more tails of the one that got away than of my catching. This is my version of the famous British Brown Trout. I do not paint my fish as I like the wood to tell its own story but I have added some colour with the tip of a hot blade to try and give the impression of movement. The base in Spalted Ash which when sanded and buffed, naturally looks like water is flowing over a rock that our trout has been sheltering behind before rising to take a fly off the surface. hopefully mine!
