The Tamblyn Girls is one of my illustrations from my Vintage Surf range. It is inspired by photos of my grandfather's three sisters when they were young women in the 1930s and living in Perranporth, Cornwall.
Aunty Winnie married a builder/undertaker who started making wooden boards in Perranporth, and Aunty Hilda was married to George Tamblyn (no relation same surname!) who started surfing in between the two wars.
Wooden bellyboarding is still very popular in Cornwall, and has been seeing a revival over the last ten years. My brother makes beautiful wooden boards which were given as prizes at the World Bellyboarding Championships which took place at Chapel Porth Beach near St Agnes in Cornwall.
