At Central St Martin's, Granary Square, great ancient blocks of timber form bench seats on which to ponder the history of the adjacent canal and its great lock gates. I took a rubbing in pencil from the wood then drew in the moonlit forest with fine black ink. The print is a high quality, permanent reproduction on archive paper. It is unmounted and unframed and measures 21x15cm.
I was immediately drawn to take a rubbing of the timber studded with round pegs which forms the bench seats on Granary Square. The peg with its cross-grain suggested a sun or a moon and as the rubbing developed, the final drawing evolved.
