A large pincushion in my 'Bee Hexie' design CUSTOM, MADE TO ORDER FOR JO.
--PLEASE DO NOT ORDER IF YOU ARE NOT SHE-- .
It is made up in three EPP parts sewn together to make a 3D hexagon.
The top layer consists of a pink Capel pattern Liberty hexagon petal of six one inch sided hexagons surrounding a centre linen/cotton blend hexagon, embroidered with a happy wee bee hovering over a chorus of flowers and is made up of satin stitch, french knots, back stitch and lazy daisy stitches sewn by hand in DMC floss.

The base layer consists of the same size hexagon petal as the top layer, made in seven one inch sided white calico cotton hexies. I have added a wee petal made up of pieced half inch hexies in coordinating Liberty fabric for decoration. I've also hand appliqued a jammypudding and custard label. I finished off this decoration with black 'quilted' hand stitches in DMC perle cotton bordering the label, Liberty petal and calico petal.

The two petal layers of the pincushion are sewn together using a connecting strip of one inch sided hand pieced linen/cotton blend fabric squares. The pincushion is filled with polyester stuffing and bird grit to make it slightly weighted. This bird grit also help sharpen any pins and needled placed in the cushion.
Measurements: approx six inches at widest point and one inch tall.

This pincushion design came to life as I had recently spent a long time making a vintage fabric English Paper Pieced quilt and had some fabric petals left over. I decided to put them to use in a pin cushion. I also love bees (I really do) and this design of a bee happily hovering over flowers had been brewing in my head for a long time. I adore the combination of linen and colourful embroidery too. It seemed only right to invite Liberty of London to the party and my 'Bee Hexie' pincushion design was born.
