BRITISH AND HANDMADE . WOODTURNED ITEMS TURNED TO HIGHLIGHT THE FIGURE AND GRAIN, NOW SOME WITH ENAMELLED CABOUCHONS FOR EXTRA INTEREST, COME INSIDE AND HAVE A LOOK.
This functional, heavy and highly decorative yarn bowl is turned from beautifully figured spalted horse chestnut. It is 196mm in diameter and stands 95mm tall. The ball of yarn stays in the bowl and the end feeds out of the stylish aperture so that the user can knit or crochet without constantly pausing to pull more yarn from the ball. After turning, the bowl was sanded smooth and finished with beeswax, ensuring that the wool feeds smoothly and does not catch on the wood. Spalting results from a form of fungus which often develops in horse chestnut and other woods after the tree has fallen over and is lying on the ground, once dry the wood remains stable.
Note from my knitting wife: I was allowed to briefly test drive the original yarn bowl and it was a joy not to be constantly retrieving my ball of wool from where it had fallen off the sofa and gone half way across the room – no tugging on the wool or untangling it from the legs of the coffee table either! When not in use, it would look great as a decorative bowl as the figuring and the curvy ‘feed’ are so stylish as well. These bowls not only use a large chunk of wood to make but also quite some time to turn and sand smooth, but time is nothing when I know how much pleasure it will give its lucky recipient.
