I'm inspired by textile wear and tear; battered sofas, a favourite armchair - time and use revealing the layers beneath; rusted studs, faded stitches. I translate these processes into my work through a variety of techniques and careful choice of embellishments: staples, rivets and industrial-style sequins. I use cut-away work to reveal layers of contrasting fabrics and I particularly like to look for fabrics that provide texture and enjoy using batiks. I never hem my fabrics and leave all edges raw to allow for some natural fraying. This fits in with my wear and tear theme and adds interest. I also think it allows a drift of one fabric into another, blurring the outlines. I design and make all my own patterns - this design is based on a simple wiggly line. I define the shape with two rows of back stitch - all done by hand. I often use two slightly different shades to give the impression of fading and sometimes I will use a dip dye thread. All pieces are worked onto felt and finished with a ball and socket fastener. I find these easy to do up yourself.
