Since I can remember, I have always been a bird lover. I have fond memories of making our own bird cakes in yoghurt pots with my mum, and hanging them out for our winged friends to eat. I am saddened to not hear the once familiar song of the cuckoo or see bullfinches at the garden bird table as I did when I was a little girl.
Corvids though are not many people's favourite birds, but I quite like them, especially from an artistic point of view, and they have appeared in many artists' paintings. They are actually very clever birds and for me a quintessential part of the British and Irish landscape. I particularly love to see and hear a murder of crows at dusk as they settle to roost for the night, not to mention the colourful names we have given to different groupings of different species!
