Since I can remember, I have always been a bird lover. I have fond memories of making our own bird cakes in yoghurt pots with my mum, and hanging them out for our winged friends to eat. I am saddened to not hear the once familiar song of the cuckoo or see bullfinches at the garden bird table as I did when I was a little girl. Swallows are one of my favourite birds, and the first sighting of one each year is a little bit of summer in itself to me. It always puts a smile on my face. To think that something so vulnerable and small could make such an epic journey, and return to the same nesting spot year on year is such an incredibile feat. They deserve our support and I can't imagine a summer sky without them in it.
