An unusual circular piece of felted art created using merino wool and silk. The wool has been laid in a spiral using the colours reflecting the many tones of the water and the great whirlpool that builds on the tide. Beginning with the small circular eddies as the tide begins to flow, represented by the silk circles that have been felted into the main spiral.
The process of mounting this circular piece was challenging but in the end the green mounting board felt right, reflecting the islands surrounding the water. The white frame reflects the foaming, frothing water, the white horses riding the tops of the waves.
Framed un-glazed to allow the tactile nature of the work to show through.
63 x 63 cms
Over the other side of the peninsula from my studio is the world renowned Coryvrechan whirlpool. A piece of water that is infamous and beautiful. Sitting between the islands of Jura and Scarba, the narrow channel with its hidden underwater pinnacle. the water surges through on the tide creating whirlpools and eddies and in the right (or wrong conditions) a huge standing wave that could sink a boat.
