British and Handmade. I love to see what lies inside the wood, come inside and see what I mean ?
A tall, stunning and quite weighty vase in English Ash and recycled Beech shelving which I have glued together and then turned to this modern stylish shape. The Ash was reversed before gluing up so that the darker heartwood is now on the outside and this gives a stunning insight into the heart of the tree. The vase has a plastic tube liner so that it can hold real flowers. It stands 230mm tall and is 71mm at its widest point, while the liner is 165mm tall and 28mm wide. After being sanded smooth the outside has been finished with two coats of clear lacquer and inside has been finished with hard wax oil to give some water repellent properties.
At last! A wooden vase which can be used for fresh flowers – sure to be a talking point! I decided to start this year off doing some of this laminated work and it has worked out quite well, the Ash’s heartwood figuring is contrasted by the tighter Beech grain and there will be other pieces using the same technique soon. Being taller and with a heavy base this vase can take longer stems. This item I feel would make a lovely Valentines day gift with a few roses placed in it. Whilst the wax oil provides some protection against water spillage these should be mopped up quickly and the liner does not require much water to fill it up.
