This scarf was designed to show off some silk yarn that I had spun from pre-dyed silk ‘hankies’. These are actually silk worm cocoons from which the silk moth has already emerged, so the empty cocoons are boiled to remove the seracin, (the gum that holds the threads together), then opened out flat. When a dyed ‘hanky’ is spun the thread produced changes shade and colour as the variable colours get drawn into it.
I used this hand spun silk to form a grid between areas of different weave patterns and colours. All the gold shades were hand dyed with dye extracted from onion skins.
Once it was completed and removed from the loom I twisted the warp threads at either end to make tasselled fringes, then washed the scarf thoroughly to enhance the softness and drape qualities and pressed it while it was still damp, to bring out the full sheen of the silk.
The scarf is 11” wide by 72” long, plus 5” of tasselled fringe at either end. (28 x 177 plus 12 cms)
I would recommend gentle washing in tepid water when necessary, and pressing while still damp.
