A scarf inspired by aerial views of undersea reefs which I saw in a documentary on TV. I loved the image of the sea, with the sun glinting white in places, and the dark, indistinct shapes of the reefs beneath. It is a one-off original scarf and is woven in 100% fine, luxurious Chinese, silk, which I hand dyed with synthetic dyes to get just the colours I wanted. It has the lovely drape and softness you expect of silk.
Once it was completed and removed from the loom I twisted the warp threads at either end to make tasselled fringes, then I washed the scarf thoroughly to enhance the softness and drape qualities and pressed it while it was still damp, to bring out the full sheen of the silk. It is 11” wide by 72” long, plus 5” of tasselled fringe at either end. (28 x 177 plus12 cms) I would recommend gentle washing in tepid water when necessary, and pressing while still damp.
Images on a TV programme of the sea, with the sun glinting white in places, and the dark, indistinct shapes of the reefs beneath, inspired me to weave this scarf.
