The edition number, title, signature and date are written under the image in pencil.

This is an original collagraph print of the iconic of 199 Steps which lead to St Mary's Church in Whitby and then to the abbey ruins beyond.

A collagraph plate is made by building up the image with texture and applied elements. Ink is then applied by hand before the artist passes the plate through an etching press with dampened paper. This method produces not only richly coloured images but also an embossed effect on the paper. All the colours in the image are applied at the same time so it is a time consuming and painstaking procedure. Once the damp paper has been passed through the press, the print is taped to a board to dry flat; this is the stage of the process you can see in the final image.

The hand made nature of the process, and the fact that the plate is inked up from scratch each time, means that every print will be unique; yours might not be identical to the ones shown here. It will be delivered to you unframed for safe shipping. It will be backed by card and wrapped in cellophane and carefully protected with tissue paper and stiff cardboard.

Whitby is one of my favourite towns in Yorkshire. There are many views of the steps from the top looking down, but the perspective from the bottom is rarely depicted. I am fascinated by the appeal of a flight of steps and the urge to climb them and find where they lead, so it seems natural to me to show the view from the start, rather than the end.
