This silk scarf is sewn at double thickness to create a smart scarf that's neat & tidy to wear (& won't dangle into your coffee-cup ;-)

FABRIC

Made from old-fashioned 100% Silk 'Satin-Crepe' a sumptuous, shiny, weighty silk. Satin-crepe is a type of weave with a beautiful drape and luxurious feel. It will mould into soft folds once handled, and can be worn by men too. Washed gently by hand, it should last a very long time.....

DESIGNS

The designs are created from motifs copied from butterfly wings which I layer into patterns with oil paints on a large canvas. The paintings are then printed on the silk by the Centre of Advanced Textiles in Scotland. Once the fabric has returned to me, I cut and hand sew the prints into silk scarves.

I love pattern in both design and philosophy. My current passion (obsession) lays with creating semiotic rules from psychoanalytic philosophies & translating them into patterns. The motifs I'm working with are taken from butterfly wings, which are layered onto a surface according to three visual languages that blend different ideas from contemporary psychoanalysis with semiotics. Kristeva coined the term semanalysis to describe this mix.

I've discovered this type of objective approach towards making art to be called 'Serial Art'.

The 1950's minimalist artist Sol Lewitt wrote that:
"The serial artist does not attempt to produce a beautiful or mysterious object but functions merely as a clerk cataloguing the results of his premise."
