There are several Pictish Beasts carved into stones in Scotland. This pendant is based on the beast on the Maiden Stone in Aberdeenshire.
Nobody is sure if the Pictish Beast is a representation of a real animal, such as a dolphin or seahorse, or possibly a Kelpie water-spirit. It is a particularly iconic Pictish symbol and I hope that you like my interpretation of the carving.
The pendant measures 2.3 cm (0.9 inches) across and 6 cm (2.3 inches) high and comes with a 49 cm (19 inches) waxed cotton cord.
I carved this item from dried bronze clay which I then fired in a kiln to produces an almost pure bronze pendant.
My interest in Celtic art began over 30 years ago. At school I used to doodle a lot and working up intricate Celtic knotwork designs occupied more of my time than it should have done. Later, I grew more interested in the animal imagery of the Celts and the Vikings and it is these images that I now use as the basis for my craft work.
The Picts were a group of Celts who lived in the far north and east of Scotland from before the Roman conquest until the 10th century. They are poorly understood, having left no written record themselves, save a little Ogam script, and with only a handful of contemporary reports from other civilisations. This mystery certainly accounts for some of the appeal of their symbols.
Nobody knows why the Picts erected their ornately carved symbol stones or the significance of the symbols. The Picts may have adorned their own bodies with them, the name Picti given them by the Romans and probably meaning painted or tattooed people.
