Oil on board painted from a black and white image of Margaret Anne Thompson , convicted of larceny at Ripon court . I decided to paint her in muted colours and a limited palette which I think highlights her situation ,Her face is haunted , her eyes staring forward
I visited Ripon court and jail and saw how the conditions were in Victorian times , I was touched by the stories and the photo's of the prisoners . So when I got home I researched the subject . I was touched by the mainly small crimes almost always bourne out of poverty and the severity of the punishments . There is a sense of injustice , these were real people , someone's relatives . Thank goodness it is a time past , another world
