I have made this box from recycled Brazilian mahogany which has a deep red colour and excellent grain pattern.

I have made it a little taller than other boxes so it could be used to store larger items such as cosmetics or essential oils.

The top of the lid is decorated with marquetry using 3 contrasting veneers to create an optical illusion known as a Lewis cube or tumbling dice.

The marquetry is all made traditionally using hardwood veneers cut and fitted by hand to create a unique one-off design.

I have added brass hinges and catches for the lid and a small recess at the base of the box to create 4 feet.

The surface of the box is finished to a silky smooth matt finish using hard-wearing polyurethane varnish and wax polish.

Every box on my site is made from basic raw materials and a design is never repeated so each box is truly unique and therefore special.

I wanted to produce a box which showed the traditional aspects of box making and marquetry.
Many antique boxes use similar Brazilian mahogany and the dice design was used widely to decorate boxes and furniture throughout the 18th and 19th century. It is a simple but effective design.
