Description

GHOST OWL

She leaves the nest on silent wing.
Fresh prey to hunt, and then to bring
back to the barn, where her children wait.
She'll feed the bairns, their hunger sate.

A golden back, a heart for a face,
the Ghost Owl makes her kill apace.
The nervous vole, the tit, the newt;
all must be guarded, all astute.

The card measures 10.4cm x 14.7cm and is printed on 100% recycled chlorine-free card. It comes with a 100% recycled eco natural (pale grey) envelope in a biodegradable clear bag (like cellophane, but made with biodegradable corn starch, so better for the environment).

Please note that as computer screens differ from one to another, the colours you see may be slightly different to the actual colours on the item.

The original painting is available at £95.00.

Inspiration

I'm very interested in folklore, which I turned to when searching for inspiration for my next animal painting. Folklore surrounding the barn owl is better recorded than for most other owls. In English literature the barn owl had a sinister reputation, probably because it was a bird of darkness, and darkness was always associated with death. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries people believed the screech of an owl flying past the window of a sick person meant the imminent death of that person.

The owl in the painting is a female barn owl who has just taken off from a nearby post to hunt prey to feed to her three owlets back at the barn. It has been a wet few days and she has been unable to catch any voles or other small mammals. As a result, she is having to resort to hunting fish – something barn owls are known to do when there is a shortage of land prey – from one of the farmer's lakes.
