A lovely handmade cushion cover featuring one of my own unique red kite designs. Every red kite silhouette has been carefully printed by hand to create a soaring flock, using my own hand-cut stencils and black acrylic paint mixed with textile medium.

The cushion cover itself is handsewn from ‘upcycled’ fabric (50% cotton, 50% polyester). I love finding new uses for materials that might otherwise be thrown away, and this lovely light blue / greenish blue fabric gives the cover a soft, lightweight finish. The kite designs have been heat-set so the cover can be washed on a gentle, cool wash, and it can be ironed on the reverse.

This cover measures approximately 15” x 15” and takes a cushion pad of around 15” (NOT INCLUDED). There is a hidden blue/grey zip closure at the top, and the design is printed only on the front of the cushion.

Please note that as this is a handprinted design on recycled material, minor variations and imperfections may occur, including in the fabric itself – this is part of the unique charm of a handmade product! As every one of my handprinted cushions has been made individually, each has a unique one-off design on it.

This cushion cover would make a lovely gift for anyone who enjoys seeing this charismatic bird of prey soaring over the British countryside, or who has been lucky enough to watch it performing amazing acrobatics at red kite feeding centres!

Red kites are a conservation success story in the UK. Once almost extinct, this beautiful bird of prey has since made an incredible comeback, and is now a common sight soaring above motorways and fields in many parts of the country.

I love watching these graceful masters of the sky as they wheel about and perform agile turns, using their distinctive forked tails to help them manoeuvre. I regularly spot them from motorways, but have also enjoyed visiting two red kite feeding centres in Wales, where dozens of red kites (as well as buzzards and ravens) come down to snatch food from the ground with amazing agility – though their thin, whistling calls seem strangely out of place for such a large bird!

This particular design is based on photographs I took at one of these feeding centres. I repeated the design across the cushion to give an idea of the swirling movement of the birds as they wait to be fed.
