I get a kick out of making art from things others discard.
I made this postcard a couple of years ago, but I didn't list it as I wanted to give the correct map credits and it has taken me a while to locate my notes.
I was drawn to the 'Mental Hospital' near Dartford Heath. Sounds awful to modern ears. After a little research I discovered that it was London's seventh asylum, Bexley Hospital, built in 1898. It had its own farm, market garden, chapel and operating theatre. In 1915, there were 2,544 patients.
To the north of this is the Ford Motor Car Works, by the Thames in Dagenham. In 1953 it employed 40,000 workers. In 1968, a strike, against sex discrimination, brought production to a standstill. In 1970 the Equal Pay Act was introduced.

Unique sewn vintage London map postcard, which could be framed as a piece of art.
Everything used in its making was destined for the bin, making it super eco-friendly.
Made from a vintage map (Geographer's No.1 Road Map Of London, c1955), old clothes and used (but clean) cereal boxes.
It is not a print. This is the original piece. There is not another the same. Although, it has got a similar-ish brother made from a different section of the map.
It measures 14.5 x 19cms.
I keeping with my ethos, it will arrive on your doormat in an envelope sewn from old magazines.
Postage is standard First Class. If you would like to pay for a more expensive form of delivery please send me a message.
All of my work is individually numbered. This piece is 726.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to give me a shout.
Thanks,
Alison
