Welcome to my Folksy shop in which you will find a variety of hand-stitched accessories for you and your home, many of which make lovely (and easy-to-post) gifts. I stitch in a variety of styles, combining traditional embroidery with other textile techniques such as felting, weaving, hand dyeing and silk painting. The re-purposing of vintage threads and fabrics, and the re-cycling of vintage linens and lace, are recurring themes and my listings include a small selection of vintage textile supplies.
A beautiful blanket or throw, crafted from a carefully chosen vintage tablecloth and printed cottons, combined with crochet in white, lilac and green.
Squares featuring embroidered motifs were cut from a vintage tablecloth. The central square is new embroidery, worked in matching threads on a blank portion of the cloth. Additional squares were cut from printed cottons - some vintage. Each fabric square was blanket stitched to a backing of new fleece fabric to provide a 'blanket weight' and cosy feel. By working into the blanket stitches, each square panel was given a border of crochet using white, lilac and green yarns. These panels were crocheted together.
Several rounds of crochet, and a scalloped edging in white, complete the blanket.
This blanket represents more than 60 hours of work! It would look lovely as a coverlet for a single bed and could be used as a topper on a standard double - perhaps over a lovely vintage 'counterpane' .

Small repairs have been made to the vintage embroidery using matching threads. I have pre-washed this item on a cool wool cycle and then dried it (as flat as possible) in a warm place - this worked well and I would recommend the same approach. Pressing should not be necessary, but if you should wish to press, do so over a cloth ON THE RIGHT SIDE using a low heat (the fleece backing may not be ironed!)

I have been experimenting with many ways of re-purposing vintage linens in my collection. I have made more traditional quilts. Many vintage textiles feature hand crochet, sometimes as inserts, attached by more or less the method which I have used, and often as lovely deep edgings to tablecloths and bed linens. I wanted to try and combine linens with crochet and the fleece backing to the squares proved the answer to achieving a warm and soft blanket feel.
