I create these still life pictures using wire and freehand embroidery to create a unique picture.

Each one starts with a few quick pen line drawings, and then I make a selection of vessels from wire (sometime 10 or more!) and eventually choose a few to put together in a final piece. The colour is freehand machine embroidery that I make using soluble fabric.

The frame is 27x22cm, and the 'drawing' is mounted on short pins so that it floats above the background. The background is covered with material with a subtle white on white pattern that echo the shapes and curves of the vases.

There is no glass in the frame, nothing between the viewer and the 'drawing'. There is a hook to hang the picture on the reverse.

It's been a long process to get to these finished, floating, wire drawings! It started in the summer of 2015 when I was asked to make a small piece for a Green Treasure Hunt in Bristol. Eventually I made some beetles using iron binding wire that I use in my jewellery work. Six months later, I had made all sorts of freestanding wire flowers in vintage bottles and sprouting from wooden blocks.

Meanwhile over on Pinterest I was collecting up all sorts of inspiring photos including the work of Morandi, Patrick Caufield and Mary Fedden, photographer Guido Cecere and numerous photos of lovely collections of things! And one day it all came together...
