One sailing boat hand crafted from driftwood and mounted on Welsh slate. The sails are made from fragments of a vintage lace tablecloth and there are decorative buttons as buoys and blue checked washi tape bunting. A strip of washi tape also sits beneath the boat to represent the sea.
The slate is an old roof slate measuring 21cm x 41cm. Decorative shells and driftwood hang from the hole which would have been for the nail. There is also string from this hole to hang. Alternatively the piece can lean against a wall.
Driftwood, shells and slate all collected in Wales.
British holidays by the sea have been frequent in my life and always include beach combing for treasure. I began making driftwood boats with my children using the treasure we had found. I love the way that individual pieces of driftwood decide the shape of the boat they become.
The driftwood, shells and slate in this piece are all from Wales.
