This piece of unique art depicts a honeysuckle flower with berries. The work has been hand embroidered on silk using fine silk floss thread.

The embroidery has been completed by hand using a needlepainting technique. Each tiny stitch has been sewn using the smallest needles and a magnifying lamp and has taken about six months to complete.
The image is based on my own photographs and sketches.

Once finished the embroidery has been stretched and laced then professionally framed. The image measures approx 17cm x 12.5cm and the frame measures approx 34cm x 28.5cm.

Other names for honeysuckle include Irish vine, woodbine, fairy trumpets, honeybind, trumpet flowers, goats leaf and sweet suckle. The old name Woodbine describes the twisting, binding nature of the honeysuckle through the hedgerows.

It was believed that if honeysuckle grew around the entrance to the home it prevented a witch from entering.

Honeysuckle has long been a symbol of fidelity and affection. Those who wear honeysuckle flowers are said to be able to dream of their true love. Its clinging nature in the language of flowers symbolises, 'we are united in love,' and emphasis's the bond of devotion and affection between two people.

In the Victorian era there was a ban on young girls bringing honeysuckle into the home because the heady fragrance of the flowers was believed to cause dreams that were far too risqué for their sensibilities.

I took a photo of wild honeysuckle while on a family holiday. It reminded me of a botanical sketch and I felt it would work beautifully with a silk shading embroidery technique. When researching honeysuckle I also loved the idea that people believed it would bring risque dreams and I certainly thought there was something fascinating about the shape.
