I love making these little dresses for girls as they are so versatile - perfect to be worn on their own or layered up in colder weather. My first was made for my niece, Pippa, and they have been known as 'Pippas' ever since. I started to feel a bit guilty that I make loads for Pippa, but not for her brother Jake (6), so one day I asked him what he wanted making, the answer - Rainbow Trousers!!! Following the look of horror in his mother's face, we agreed to rainbow pyjamas.

I'm still working on those, but that conversation did inspire the idea for this dress. It had been pinging around in my head for a while before I got around to the actual making. I have seen a few rainbow dresses out there, but I wanted mine to be a little different, so first up I decided on dotty cotton, and then when I was sewing it up I had the idea of 3D clouds, so the clouds actually stand out a little from the dress to make them a little fluffy, as clouds should be!
